Refresh the louvres, assess the mechanism

Replacement vertical blind slats for an existing rail

Replacement vertical blind slats can refresh a blind whose headrail still works. The upright fabric strips, also called louvres, may be faded, damaged or simply the wrong colour for a redecorated room. Re-slatting focuses on that hanging material instead of automatically replacing the entire blind.

The first decision is whether the mechanism deserves to stay. A rail that draws and rotates properly is different from one with broken carriers or a failing control. We assess the existing blind and the replacement material together, so new louvres are not ordered for a fault they cannot fix.

One damaged slat or a complete set?

An individual louvre can sometimes be replaced when the original material is still available. Matching an older fabric is not only a question of its name: sunlight and cleaning can change the colour of the slats already hanging. A new strip may look noticeably different beside them, even when it began as the same shade.

Replacing the complete set gives a more consistent finish and allows a change of texture or opacity. Keep a sound rail if it suits the new specification, but compare the cost of the necessary repair and new louvres with a complete replacement if several parts are worn.

The hanger, width and finished drop

Replacement slats need to work with the carriers in your headrail. The top hanger, louvre width and bottom weight arrangement all matter. A fabric strip with a similar appearance is not necessarily interchangeable, and a poor fit can leave gaps or prevent the blind from turning as it should.

The finished drop is measured for the actual installation. We check clearance above the sill or floor, the existing rail position and how the slats hang when closed. Keep an old louvre available for inspection if you have one, but do not cut a replacement before its finished dimensions and fittings are agreed.

Choose the replacement fabric for the room

Re-slatting is a chance to reconsider what the blind needs to do. A light-filtering material can keep a living room bright, while dim-out or blackout fabric reduces light through the louvres. The overlaps and edges still affect the result, so a darker fabric does not turn a vertical blind into a sealed blackout system.

For kitchens or other rooms where wiping down matters, compare suitable PVC and fabric options and their cleaning instructions. Look at samples with daylight behind them as well as against the wall colour. The old blind's material need not dictate the new one, provided the rail and fittings are compatible.

When falling slats need a repair instead

If a louvre repeatedly drops, inspect the cause before replacing every strip. A damaged top hanger is different from a broken carrier inside the rail. New fabric does not repair a carrier that will no longer hold its load or a mechanism that will not rotate.

Our falling-slats guide covers the fault-finding side; this page covers the replacement specification once the problem is understood. Avoid forcing a stuck rail or gluing moving parts. Tell us whether one slat falls, several fall, or the whole blind refuses to draw, because those descriptions help identify what needs assessing.

Re-covering a roller is a separate decision

Replacement roller blind fabric needs assessment of the tube, fabric attachment, bottom bar and control. It is not the same operation as hanging new vertical louvres. A roller blind repair may address the mechanism; re-covering changes the fabric. The condition and compatibility of the retained parts decide whether either route makes sense.

For a vertical blind repair or re-covering enquiry, tell us which type you have and what is wrong. We quote after identifying the work and parts required, rather than applying the lead time for a complete new blind to every repair. The repair assessment establishes availability and timing before you decide.

Refresh the louvres, assess the mechanism - your questions

Yes, where the rail is sound and compatible replacement louvres are available. Its carriers, controls and fittings need checking before the new slats are specified.

It depends on material availability and how the existing fabric has aged. We compare the old louvre with the replacement; a full set may give a closer overall finish.

Not if the fault is in the rail or carrier mechanism. That needs a repair assessment rather than new fabric alone.

Timing depends on the selected material, compatible fittings and any repair work. We confirm availability and the expected timing when the work is quoted.

Ask about replacing your vertical louvres

Describe the blind, the condition of its rail and whether you want one slat or a complete set. We can assess the repair and replacement options.
