What schools and workplaces usually need

Every building is different, but the same handful of practical questions comes up on almost every commercial survey.

Glare on screens and whiteboards

A sunscreen roller blind is the usual answer where people need to work with the blind down. It cuts the harshness and the heat while you can still see out, which is why we recommend it for desks facing the sun and for screens near windows. We supply sunscreen fabrics through our Luxaflex and Blind Screens ranges, so you can feel the difference between openness levels at the survey.

Where finer control helps, Venetian blinds tilt the light away from a screen without darkening the whole room, and vertical blinds handle very wide windows and full walls of glass at a sensible cost per window.

Classrooms and halls: getting a room properly dark

Blackout fabric is only half the answer; the light that spoils a darkened room usually comes round the edges of the blind. At the survey we look at whether the blind can sit inside the window reveal and how the fixing changes the light spill, then specify accordingly. Blackout roller blinds are the workhorse here, with lined options available.

For exam halls, presentation rooms and any room used with a projector, we measure and quote the whole room in one visit. Standard blinds are usually made and fitted within two to three weeks of ordering, and temporary blinds can go up in the meantime if the room cannot wait.

Child safety in schools and nurseries

Every blind we fit is supplied in line with the UK child safety standard, with the safety devices, such as a break-away chain and tensioner, fitted by us rather than left in the box. Where a room is used by young children, spring-operated cordless blinds or motorised control take the cords out of reach altogether, and we will suggest the tidiest control for each room at the survey.

There is no extra charge for safety devices. Compliance is included on every blind we supply and fit.

Fabrics and slats that survive daily use

Busy rooms need window coverings that can be wiped clean and, ideally, repaired rather than replaced. PVC vertical louvres wipe down and tolerate moisture, which suits kitchens, craft rooms and clinics. Vertical blinds also have a practical advantage in schools and offices: a single damaged louvre can be replaced without redoing the whole blind.

Aluminium Venetian slats are another hard-wearing choice, and roller fabrics come in wipe-clean and moisture-resistant finishes. Where durability and, where needed, fire-retardant fabrics matter, we will talk through the specification at the survey.

Meeting rooms, receptions and offices

Meeting rooms usually want both settings in one product: open and bright for a working session, private for a confidential one. Venetian blinds tilt from open to closed without moving up or down, day and night blinds switch between sheer and solid bands, and blackout-backed rollers give the fullest privacy.

Motorisation through our Luxaflex range suits high windows, full-height glazing and boardrooms where a wall of blinds needs to move together. On wider doors and room dividers, tracked shutters slide along a rail and give a smart, solid finish that also insulates.

How the process works

One visit covers it: we bring samples to your building, measure every window on the spot, and note anything that affects the fit or the price, such as high-level fixings, radiators or window handles. You then get a written quote with no obligation.

Blinds are usually made and fitted within two to three weeks; shutters take six to ten weeks because each panel is built to your frame. Fitting is done by our own fitters, and our Hythe High Street showroom is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm if you would like to see products working first. We cover East Kent, excluding Thanet.
