Roof windows need a blind that stays put
Gravity is the whole problem with a roof window. Hang an ordinary blind on a sloping frame and the fabric sags away from the glass, letting light and heat straight past the edges.
Roof-window blinds solve this with side channels that grip the fabric along both edges and hold it flat at any angle, and those same channels are what make a blackout version genuinely dark.
Getting the right size
Roof window blinds are made to the manufacturer's frame code rather than to a measured aperture. On a Velux the code is on a label at the top of the sash, visible when you rotate the window.
We read the code at survey. If the label is missing or unreadable, we measure the frame directly and cross-reference the model.
Choosing the fabric
Three jobs, three fabrics.
- Blackout with reflective backing — bedroom darkness and summer heat rejection in one
- Pleated translucent — softens light and adds a small insulating air layer
- Solar screen — cuts glare on a roof window over a desk while keeping the sky visible
- Insect screen — a separate roller for rooflights that are left open in summer
Reaching a high rooflight
Anything above comfortable reach should be motorised or pole-operated. Battery and solar-powered motors both suit rooflights, and solar makes particular sense on a window that gets direct sun anyway.
