The cord on my blind has snapped, is that fixable?

First, deal with the loose cord

Before anything else, get any hanging cord or chain up out of reach of children and pets. A cleat, a cord tidy or simply looping it high and out of the way will do until the blind is repaired. This is not us being cautious for the sake of it: looped cords near a bed or cot are the single biggest safety issue with window blinds.

If the blind is now stuck in a half open position and cannot be lowered, leave it there rather than pulling on the remaining cord. One broken cord in a lift system usually means the other is carrying twice its share.

• Secure loose cord above child height straight away.
• Move a cot, bed or chair away from the window until it is fixed.
• Do not pull harder on the remaining cord to force the blind down.

Why cords snap in the first place

Almost every cord failure we see is abrasion, not a manufacturing fault. The cord passes over a plastic pulley or through a cord lock thousands of times, and the sheath frays a little each time. Kitchens and bathrooms speed this up, because steam and cooking residue stiffen the cord and make it saw rather than slide.

Sunlight is the other culprit. On a south facing window the cord that sits exposed in the light will go brittle years before the rest of the blind looks tired. If your cord snapped clean with no fraying, direct sun is usually the reason.

What can be restrung and what cannot

Corded venetian and wooden blinds are the most restringable, because the cord path is accessible along the headrail and replacement cord in the right diameter is available. Roman blinds can also often be restrung, though it is fiddly work and the cord must be routed through every ring at the correct length or the folds will hang unevenly.

Chain operated roller blinds are different. When a beaded chain fails it is usually the clutch inside the roller that has worn and chewed the chain, so a new chain alone rarely lasts. Cordless and spring systems are not restringable at all, they are sealed units.

• Venetian and wooden blinds: usually restringable if the headrail is sound.
• Roman blinds: restringable, but the ring spacing must be set correctly.
• Roller blinds with a broken chain: check the clutch, a new chain alone may not last.
• Spring or cordless systems: sealed, replacement rather than repair.

The child safety rules that now apply

Since 2014 all internal window blinds sold in the UK must be supplied with child safety devices fitted or included, and the cord or chain must be secured so a loop cannot form within reach of a child. That applies to a replacement blind, and it is a good reason to look at cordless or wand operated options while you are choosing.

If your existing blind predates that and there is no cleat on the wall, this is a sensible moment to change how the blind is operated rather than simply putting the same cord back.

A snapped cord as a prompt, not just a repair

Cords fail on the blinds that get used most, which are usually the ones in the rooms you care about. If the blind in question is in a nursery or a child's bedroom, this is the moment to move to a cordless or wand operated system rather than restringing the same design.

The same logic applies in a kitchen. If steam and cooking residue killed the cord, they will do it again. A chainless roller or a wand tilted venetian removes the failure point entirely rather than resetting the clock on it.
