Choosing blinds for a bathroom or a kitchen

Bathrooms and en suites

ABS waterproof shutters are the only thing we will specify directly above a bath or inside a shower enclosure. They are fully synthetic, they will not swell, and they take a splash without complaint. Louvres tilt to give you daylight without giving the neighbours a view.

Where the window is away from the water, a moisture resistant faux wood Venetian or a PVC backed roller works well and costs less. Avoid real timber Venetians and lined Roman blinds in any room with a bath in it.

• Frosted glass plus a tilting louvre gives privacy in daylight without a permanently closed blind.
• Perfect fit frames avoid drilling into tiles or a uPVC frame.
• Mould shows first on untreated timber battens, so specify synthetic and forget about it.

Kitchens

Over a sink, a roller in a wipe clean fabric is hard to beat, because you can take the whole face down with a soapy cloth. Beside a hob, keep the fabric short of the flame path and choose a faux wood Venetian if you want the slatted look without a fire risk.

For bi-folds and patio doors off a kitchen diner, perfect fit blinds on each pane keep the doors usable, and vertical blinds still make sense on very wide runs where budget matters.
