Room by room

Choosing kitchen blinds that survive real cooking

A kitchen is the harshest room in the house for a window dressing. Steam from the hob, airborne cooking oil, splashes at the sink and a window that is often opened and closed a dozen times a day. Fabrics that look beautiful in a bedroom go limp and yellow above a kitchen sink within a couple of years.

We fit kitchens across Hythe, Folkestone, Ashford and the Romney Marsh villages, and the ranges we recommend are deliberately narrow. Not because choice is bad, but because most of the catalogue simply is not built for the room.

Room by room: Choosing kitchen blinds that survive real cooking in an East Kent home, fitted by Homestyle Blinds & Shutters

What we fit in Kent kitchens — and why

Three products do the overwhelming majority of the work. Each solves a slightly different kitchen layout.

  • Wipe-clean PVC and acrylic-coated roller blinds — for windows directly above a sink or drainer
  • Faux-wood Venetian blinds — for period kitchens where you want a slatted timber look without warping
  • Perfect-fit blinds — for UPVC casement and tilt-and-turn windows, clipped into the frame with no drilling
  • Café-style shutters — for street-facing kitchens where you want privacy at counter height and light above

The hob clearance rule

If the window sits within roughly a metre of a gas hob, we will not fit a loose-hanging fabric such as a Roman blind or a vertical. Fabric near a naked flame is a genuine risk and no guarantee covers it.

In that layout we steer you to a faux-wood Venetian or a shutter, both of which sit flat to the recess and can be tilted rather than pulled down.

Cleaning, honestly

A wipe-clean roller takes a damp microfibre cloth and about ten seconds. Faux-wood slats need a duster along the top edge every few weeks and a warm soapy wipe once or twice a year. Real timber Venetians in a kitchen will eventually swell at the ends, which is why we steer away from them.

We show you the correct cleaning routine at handover rather than leaving a leaflet behind.
