Garden rooms: all that glass, all year round
The whole point of a garden room is the garden. Fit the wrong blind and you have spent a lot of money to look at a piece of fabric, which is why almost every garden room we quote uses a solar-screen or a slat that can be angled rather than something opaque.
The other half of the brief is heat. A modern garden room with a flat rooflight and a bi-fold wall gains and loses heat faster than any other room in the house.
Keeping the view
Solar-screen roller fabric at 5% or 10% openness keeps the garden clearly visible while cutting glare and UV. In the evening the effect reverses — you can see out, but with the lights on people can see in, so a second layer or a dimout option matters if the room is used after dark.
Verticals with wide louvres are the traditional answer for a long glazed wall and still work well, angled to follow the sun.
Bi-folds and sliders
Anything fitted to a bi-fold wall has to stack clear of the opening. Perfect-fit blinds on each pane travel with the door leaves; a track-mounted vertical or panel system stacks to one side.
We measure the stack allowance at survey — getting this wrong is the most common fault we are asked to correct on other companies' installations.
Flat rooflights
A flat or lantern rooflight is where the summer heat arrives. Pleated systems with a reflective backing sit within the aperture and take the sting out without darkening the room to gloom.
In winter the same pleat traps a layer of still air and slows the heat leaving upwards.
