Home office windows: stop the glare, keep the daylight
The instinct when a screen glares is to shut everything out. Then you spend the afternoon under a ceiling light feeling like it is 9pm. The better answer is a product that deflects or diffuses light rather than blocking it.
Home offices are also the room where video calls matter, and a blind changes how you look on camera as much as it changes the glare.
Solar-screen roller fabric
Solar screens are woven with a stated openness factor — typically 1%, 3%, 5% or 10%. Lower numbers block more glare and more view; higher numbers keep the outlook sharp.
For most Kent home offices a 3% screen in a dark colour is the sweet spot: dark yarns absorb glare and preserve the view out, while pale yarns scatter light and can actually make glare worse.
Tilting slats for a moving sun
If the sun tracks across the window through the working day, a Venetian or a shutter louvre lets you redirect it upwards to the ceiling instead of onto the screen — bright room, no glare.
This is the option we recommend for west-facing studies, where the problem is worst between two and five in the afternoon in winter.
Looking right on camera
A window directly behind you turns you into a silhouette. A dimout roller behind the desk fixes that in one move.
A window in front of you is ideal lighting, and a light-diffusing fabric softens it into something flattering rather than harsh.
